INFO ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

About acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the worlds oldest healing modalities, having been in continual use for approximately 3000 years.  In fact, one of the oldest discovered books in the world is a medical book about acupuncture that was compiled over 2400 years ago. Acupuncture, along with massage, cupping, and many other traditional Chinese treatments have truly stood the test of time.

About acupuncture treatments

What is an acupuncture treatment like?

For each treatment we check your pulse and ask to see your tongue and ask questions regarding your current symptoms.  The first treatment is longest because we need to get a detailed medical history.  The more complete information we have of your medical history, surgical history, lifestyle, etc, the easier it will be to get a complete and accurate picture.  This helps with making a correct diagnosis.

How should I prepare for a treatment?

It’s best to have had at least a little food prior to your treatment-it's best to not have acupuncture on an empty stomach.  Please let us know if you’re hungry when coming in for your treatment.  It’s best to wear loose comfortable clothing to the treatment.  This allows access to the chosen acupuncture points.  Most points used will be from the elbows to the hands and from the knees to the feet.

Once the needles are inserted, they are retained for 20 minutes.  You can use this time to focus on your breathing and relax.  A short massage and/or cupping might be recommended and is included in the price of the acupuncture treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

While each person is different, and there are cases where patients came in once and felt completely better, multiple treatments are needed for the body to improve.

You can help support your treatments by eating a proper diet, getting proper exercise, getting adequate sleep and reducing alcohol, smoking or other recreational drug intake.

How frequent are treatments?

Depending on the patient’s situation, most treatments are weekly.  For fertility patients, we generally recommend three to six months of weekly treatments to prepare your body for conception.  If you're in an IVF cycle, twice a week to help strengthen your body will likely be recommended.

FEAR OF NEEDLES?

Do you have a fear of needles?

P a fear of needles is the biggest reason that keeps a person from trying acupuncture.  Believe it or not, acupuncture itself is essentially a painless proceedure-but it is not sensation-free.  It’s common that you won’t feel a strong sensation with needle insertion-or if you do feel something, you’ll feel a bit of heaviness, or tingling or possibly even feel a sensation (such as hot or cold) travel along the meridian itself.  Pain with needle insetion may occur, but it is not usually painful.

If you are certain you don't want to try an acupuncture, we have an option for you.  We offer a massage and cupping session.  If you have a very strong fear of needles, this is an option for you.  Call (408) 356-6601

Biography

Acupuncture acupuncturist Fertility Los Gatos

Even as a young child, Greg has always been interested in how the body works and the body-mind connection.  He made a career change into holistic healing and acupuncture after a successful career as an Executive Recruiter at various tech companies in the bay area.  He arranged an internship with Dr. Angela Wu at Wu's Healing Center, a nationally-known fertility acupuncturist and fertility clinic in San Francisco in 2000.  Shortly after starting his internship with Wu's Healing Center, he started his master's degree at American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in San Francisco, one of the most well known Traditional Chinese Medicine schools.

In addition to receiving his Masters, he was certified in Tui Na (acupressure) for pain management and sports injuries.  While in school he also learned Chi Nei Tsang (abdominal massage) from Dr. Wu and Grandmaster Mantak Chia, both in San Francisco and in Chiang Mai, Thailand, ultimately receiving his certificate as a Universal Tao instructor.

Upon graduating from ACTCM he spent almost 5 years working as an acupuncturist at Mae Fah Luang University Hospital, in Chiang Rai, a city in Northern Thailand, where he expanded his focus from fertility patients to treating many different conditions including: pain management (lower-back pain, arthritis, office-related injuries, pain resulting from vehicle accidents, etc.), stroke, stress, menses-related issues, insomnia, allergies, migraines, and asthma.   When he wasn't treating patients at the hospital he was teaching students of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

He was a lecturer of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to university students when he wasn't treating patients at the hospital. Mae Fah Luang University Hospital organized remote clinics to various mountain villages and small towns to help with public outreach and to better serve the Chiang Rai community and surrounding areas.  Additionally he was invited to speak at several traditional medicine conferences on various subjects hosted by the university.

On most weekends during his time living in Thailand he treated monks and participated in organized clinics at their forest temples all over Northern Thailand. After returning to California he was in practice in Oakland for several years.  He has since closed that practice and is working for Stanford Blood Center and as an Associate Acupuncturist at Los Gatos Oriental Medicine clinic and is currently pursuing his Doctorate degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
